After a career in horticulture and arboriculture Roli re-trained following a pathway through carpentry and joinery, into furniture craft, and finally to historical and ornamental woodcarving.

His main abstract wood sculptures are based on a merging of geometry and natural forms often taking the shape of spirals. He calls this on-going body of work “Roliometries”.

The choice of timber for each carving is made only after the form has been finalized as drawings/maquettes. This is to be sure that the flow of 3D lines and surfaces compliments the grain of the timber.
